Chapter 18

Cari

The weeks were passing fast and Cari felt her purpose strengthening every day.

There was nothing wrong with getting to know Nick since she worked with him. Yes, she was definitely going to go with that. She was only interested in him because they worked together.

And Santa hated Christmas.

She did like how much she was needed and how much she enjoyed spending time with Nick seemed to be an added bonus.

When she wasn’t with him, like right at that moment, she felt an emptiness around her like a vacuum that only seemed filled when Nick was around. She didn’t push him on anything. If he didn’t answer a question or reply to something she said, she acted like she hadn’t said anything,

But it was getting tiresome. She didn’t know what he was thinking half the time. That drove her nuts.

Walking through the front door at home, Cari set her purse on the bench set to the side of the foyer. She strode into the kitchen, smiling at her sisters, some of their husbands, and her father as they gathered for a weekly family dinner she hadn’t attended since the fire.

“Look who’s here. We haven’t seen you in forever.” Taylor wiggled her fingers at Cari, mixing the contents of a large plastic bowl in front of her.

“Yeah, I’ve been busy.” Cari moved across the kitchen, grabbing out some serving dishes to put on the dining room table.

“You’re hardly ever home. It’s weird.” Their father leaned on the counter, bracing his elbows on the granite like he was settling in to watch her for a while.

Cari laughed, shaking her head. “It’s not like that at all. Doctor Lanford has been behind because of his injuries and I’m helping him try to get caught up. Some days it’s longer than normal hours.”

“Well, we’re talking about doing the auction again. Kali said it’s okay.” Lily motioned into the air with a wooden spoon she dropped back into a glass bowl. “We want to do it early December. Do you think you can be in it as a date this time?”

Cari stopped what she was doing and stared at Lily, her mouth agape but no sound coming out. Why couldn’t Cari do it? She was doing things over the last few weeks she’d never thought possible. Maybe going up for auction was exactly what she needed to help even more with her confidence.

She nodded. “You know what? I think that sounds perfect.”

Lily, Taylor and Tanya squealed, moving around Cari like they were in some kind of football huddle.

Amanda grinned from where she stood at the stove. There was something distant in her eyes. Cari hadn’t been around to check in on her. She’d have to fix that.

“I think it’s important we get the list ready now so we can bring in more buyers.” Taylor scraped the bowl into another pan.

Roman rocked their youngest in the corner of the living room. The open floor plan made it easy for him to participate in the conversation.

“Who is
